On behalf of the National Principal for Ensemble Rob Bennett, Pipe Bands Australia is pleased to publish a new Ensemble Syllabus, supported by an updated Ensemble Handbook, through the Australian Pipe Band College.

The new syllabus is released in its 4th revision following feedback received from Vice Principals and National Councillors, and provides a clear statement of the knowledge and competencies required on the pathway to accreditation as a PBA Ensemble Adjudicator.

Building on the foundations of ensemble adjudication established in Australia, the revised material reflects contemporary musical expectations and adjudication practices. It also draws on current RSPBA modelling and feedback from across the Australian Pipe Band College.

The accompanying Ensemble Handbook expands on the syllabus and introduces practical frameworks to support consistent, constructive and musically informed adjudication. These include the Four Is:

  • Introduction,
  • Intonation,
  • Interpretation
  • and Integration

Together, the new resources are designed to strengthen adjudicator development, improve the clarity and consistency of ensemble assessment, and support Australian bands in developing their musical presentation.

The new Ensemble Syllabus and Ensemble Handbook are now available from the Australian Pipe Band College Website.
